Stefan Wahl is the co-founder and CEO of ECIX. Since founding the company in 2001, Stefan has overseen the steady expansion and growth of all exchanges operated by ECIX. In his role as CEO, Stefan is responsible for the overall course of affairs, with an emphasis on sales, marketing, communication and representing ECIX in industry and governmental organisations.
Before founding ECIX, Stefan held various senior management roles at BerliKomm, BerlinNet and Conbill. Prior to this, he ran his own Berlin-based engineering and consultancy firm. As a student of engineering, he worked freelance on various internet and network projects as a consultant, project manager or software developer.
Aydin joined ECIX in 2013 and currently serves as COO. He is responsible for operational processes and strategy, with a focus on Finance, HR and international business development. Aydin’s main task is to improve ECIX' competitiveness and increase its appeal to international customers. This follows a successful launch and build-out of the ECIX Frankfurt exchange, bringing much needed flexibility and cost-effectiveness to that market.
Before joining ECIX, Aydin founded network service provider Atrato in 2009. In just four years, the company built a presence in 75 metros in 15 countries, from LA to Budapest and from Stockholm to Madrid. A year after Aydin left, Atrato was acquired by Hibernia Networks to act as its IP network division. Prior to Atrato, Aydin worked in various IT management and consulting roles for enterprises and governmental organisations.
Kay joined ECIX in 2010 as a network engineer. As ECIX grew, Kay's role evolved. He has held the role of CTO since Peter Lieven handed over his responsibilities in 2014. Daily responsibilities include managing the NOC and Engineering teams, ensuring reliable operation of the ECIX peering platform and scaling the platform to ensure it delivers the high bandwidths required for current and future applications.
Before joining ECIX, Kay worked for Netsign, which provides IT Consulting services to major ISPs and hosting providers. His work focused on large-scale deployments and system architecture. Kay is also an enthusiastic member of the (inter)national Internet community and involved in several associations for the good of the Internet. He supports various large Internet related conferences and has managed a NOC that built large scale networks supporting over 10.000 concurrent users at unusual temporary locations.
Peter Lieven is the co-founder and first CTO of ECIX. He built the first peering platforms as well as a large part of ECIX’ back office and management software and has held concurrent jobs at ECIX from the start. Following the transfer of his duties to Kay Rechthien, he remains responsible for outreach to the German Internet community, Business Development and he is available as an advisor to ECIX management.
Prior to founding ECIX, Peter studied at the University of Dusseldorf where he obtained his Master degree in Informatics. After his studies, Peter worked at Mesh GmbH as a peering manager. During this time and afterwards he worked as a free-lancer in the areas of Backbone and network design, traffic engineering and Data Flow Analysis. Since 2011, he has been mainly employed at Kamp GmbH as director of software engineering.
